Alabama Hopes to Cut Down on DUI’s Memorial Day Weekend

May 7, 2008

You should expect to see extra police patrols this Memorial Day.

The governor approved more than 73-thousand dollars in grants to enable the city of montgomery and 8 central Alabama counties to increase police patrols during the holiday. The extra patrols will be looking for for speeding, DUI, and seat belt violations.

In addition to Montgomery, the extra patrols will be in Autauga, Bullock, Elmore, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, and Russell Counties. The governor hopes the extra money will help cut down on fatal accidents.

Mischa Barton Pulls Get Out of Jail Card

May 7, 2008

Word is Mischa Barton will accept a plea deal in her DUI case. Translation: No jail time.

I know, I’m as shocked as you are. Another celebrity gets off a DUI with a light knuckle rap?

The former “O.C.” star will probably plead no contest to DUI at her arraignment Thursday in Beverly Hills court, and agree to serve a three-year unsupervised probation term, according to people.com. The operative word here is “unsupervised.”

Barton will also do three months of alcohol ed and scare up the loose change needed to pay a fine of around $1,700.

Apparently, the marijuana possession charge will be dropped, due to the small amount found. Another charge of driving without a license will be reduced to an infraction, according to the source who blabbed to People mag.

Apparently, these kinds of deals are common for first-time offenders. But I bet Paris Hilton is still steamed.

Barton, 22, was popped for suspicion of DUI in West Hollywood on Dec. 27, after deputies saw her car weaving between two lanes of traffic. She also failed to signal when making a turn, another big no-no.

But she’s sure talking like she’s learned her lesson. In fact, she told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show:

“Obviously I’m 100 percent responsible for my actions in this case. I’m really disappointed in myself. I don’t know what to say about it, except that I’m not perfect, and I just don’t ever intend to do something this stupid again.”

Oh, never say never!

Lohan’s Lawyer Blasts USA Today

May 7, 2008

If you picked up a copy of USA Today on Friday (May 2), you might have been thrown off by a full-page ad with the big, bold headline, “Ignition interlocks — A good idea for,” above the infamous post-DUI-arrest mug shot of Lindsay Lohan. The next line reads, “But a bad idea for us,” over a series of pictures of a happy bride and groom toasting each other, some smiling young adults hoisting their brews and martinis, and three pals clinking beers over a meal.

Melo BAC Was Above Legal Level

May 7, 2008

Tests prove that Carmelo Anthony had an illegal blood-alcohol level when he was arrested on April 14th under suspicion of DUI.

It has been a painful week for Nuggets fans, and we can only imagine what team owner Stanley Kroenke is thinking at this moment. Melo had already confessed to drinking and driving, though time will tell whether his candor was a sign of maturity or shrewd public relations. Any discipline meted out by the team will come after the legal process is finished.

May 7, 2008

The Kansas City Missouri Police Department DUI Section recently focused extra enforcement efforts on impaired driving laws May 2-5, 2008. Included in this effort was a Wolfpack DUI Saturation Patrol on Cinco De Mayo, 5-5-08, conducted from 2000-0400 hours.

During the Wolfpack, DUI officers, as well as officers from other department elements made 11 DUI arrests, issued 7 Driving While Suspended/Revoked tickets, 17 Hazardous Moving Violations, and 30 Other Traffic Violations. Additionally one subject was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance, and 4 subjects arrested for 16 city warrants.

In addition to processing DUI arrests for Patrol Officers, DUI Section Officers conducted enforcement activity resulting in  6 DUI arrests, 21 Hazardous Moving Violations, and 3 Other Traffic Violations from May 2-4.

Driving while intoxicated remains one of the top causes of fatal car crashes in Missouri. In 2006, 273 people in Missouri were killed in more than 7,900 alcohol related crashes. Enforcement efforts like this one help to take impaired drivers off the road and make travel in Missouri safer.

“Mello” Cited for Speeding After DUI

May 7, 2008

Denver Nuggets All-Star Carmelo Anthony has been ticketed for speeding, three weeks after he was cited on a charge of driving under the influence. Police say Anthony was pulled over Saturday for driving 60 mph in a 45-mph zone.

The 23-year-old was arrested on a DUI charge in Denver on April 14. He apologized the next day. He is scheduled to be in court June 5 on the DUI charge.

Police spokesman Sonny Jackson says Anthony does not have to appear in court on the speeding ticket if he mails in the $130 fine.
